Intro to Hockey - Novice and Initiation Program

May. 29, 2018

Hello Everyone,

As you may have read in the news, Hockey Canada mandate for half-ice novice hockey game play will take effect at the beginning of the 2019/2020 hockey season.   The "Game Play" model was designed to maximize the opportunity to engage all players in the game, with the primary focus on age appropriate training, specifically skill development in the areas of skating, puck control, passing, receiving and shooting.

VP of Operations pulled together a pool of trusted coaches at the novice and elite levels along with board members to discuss the options and path moving forward with the primary goal of ensuring the best development for our young players.

The decision that will be implemented is the creation of Minor and Major divisions for both Initiation and Novice Hockey. This simply means that players will be broken into new divisions by age as follows:
  • Minor Initiation      Born 2013 (including any 2014 underage players)
  • Major initiation      Born in 2012
  • Minor Novice        Born in 2011
  • Major Novice        Born in 2010

With in the Major and Minor Divisions, players will be tiered based on skating levels. The number of teams and tiers will be decided by the directors at the beginning of the season after they see their evaluation scores and enrolment numbers.

Given that this new structure introduces two new divisions, we are also in need of more Division Director people to fill these new roles.    We are pleased to announce that we have two retuning Directors who were both a part of the Intro to Hockey Committee and eager to see this program succeed.  We are looking for 2 Initiation Directors that will be willing to step in and Join them.

  • Minor Initiation - Vacant
  • Major initiation -  Vacant
  • Minor Novice - Will Eros
  • Major Novice - Ryan Wood

Our Initiation Division has already been playing the Half-Ice Hockey on the mini ice. Therefore, we will not see any significant change to the structure of this program. However, we have agreed to ease into this change in Novice by taking advantage of this “crossover year” by starting our Minor Novice players on half-ice hockey and having our Major Novice players continue with full ice hockey in the 2018/2019 season. Thus, setting us up perfectly for both levels of novice to play half-ice hockey in the 2019/2020 season as mandated by Hockey Canada.

We thank you for your support.
